Vault vs iCloud

When your iCloud plan stops scaling with your camera.

iCloud is excellent for the iPhone half of your life and limited for the working-camera half. The 12 TB ceiling is a real number, the Photos library compresses by default if Optimize Storage is on, and there is no one human to call when something stops syncing. Vault is what you move the working archive to once the camera fills up faster than the iPhone.

Why people end up looking

  • iCloud caps at 12 TB. Past that, Apple has no answer.
  • Optimize Storage is on by default. Your "originals" on a synced device may already be downsized JPEGs.
  • iCloud account lockouts are unrecoverable in the worst case. There is no appeal path.
  • Everything assumes you live entirely inside the Apple ecosystem. Many working photographers do not.

When Vault is the better fit

You have outgrown 12 TB, or you want the working archive separated from the everyday Photos library, or you want to keep your camera files in a place that does not require an Apple ID to retrieve.
