Vault vs SmugMug

Vault is an archive. SmugMug is a storefront.

SmugMug is a gallery and ecommerce product first, with storage attached. Vault is storage first, with nothing attached. If you already have a portfolio site and what you need is a place to put the working originals, the right tool is the smaller one.

Why people end up looking

  • SmugMug optimizes for displaying photos. Vault optimizes for safely holding them.
  • RAW handling on portfolio products is usually secondary. Originals can be downsized for previews.
  • You pay for portfolio features (themes, ecommerce, custom domains) you may not need if your website already exists.
  • Storage and portfolio in one product means losing both if the vendor changes direction.

When Vault is the better fit

Your portfolio already lives somewhere (or you do not need one). You want a clean separation between the work you show and the work you store. You would rather pay less for storage and have a portfolio you control elsewhere.

The studio behind Vault

Vault is operated by Bright Presence Digital, a Pittsburgh-area web design and hosting studio. If you also need a website built or hosted, that is a separate product line and the same person picks up the phone.
